At the MIT Alumni Association's Technology Day 2003:
Fast Times at MIT: What's New, What's Next–Now What?
DMSE's Edwin L. Thomas, Director of the Institute for Soldier
Nanotechnologies, spoke on "Taking Nanotechnology from
the Laboratory to the Soldier." See MIT

Awards
Megan Frary and some of her collaborators at Caterpillar
and Oak Ridge National Laboratory have won an "R&D
100 award" for developing one of the 100 most technologically
significant new products of the year. The title of their product
is: "CF8C-Plus: New Cast Stainless Steel for High-Temperature
Performance."
Minjoo Larry Lee was a Gold Award Winner for Graduate Student
Research at the 2003 MRS Spring Meeting held in San Francisco,
CA. The award was given to him for his work on strained silicon
and strained germanium for next- generation CMOS applications.
In addition to crystal growth and characterization, he fabricated
working electrical devices in order to understand the physical
characteristics and demonstrate the usefulness of these novel
materials.
For his work on "Design of Morphology and Chemistry
of Polymer Filtration Membranes," Ariya Akthakul was
a Graduate Student Silver Award at the Materials Research
Society meeting in Dec 2002, a Padden Award Finalist from
American Physical Society in Mar 2003, and a recipient of
the OMNOVA Signature Award in April 2003.

Departmental News
Fran Chaput left the Administrative Services Organization
on July 23, 2003 to transfer to the Department of Biology
where she will provide assistance to the Personnel Administrator.
DMSE thanks Fran for her exemplary contributions over the
past seven years and wishes her much success in her new position.
It is a pleasure to announce that Ms. Esther Greaves Estwick
joined the Administrative Services Organization effective
Monday, July 28, 2003. Esther filled the position that was
previously held by Fran Chaput. Esther brings to the position
twenty-three years of experience at MIT. Since coming to MIT,
she has worked in various areas of the central Human Resources
Department, and will now have the opportunity to experience
an academic department. Esther can be reached at extension
8-7045. Please welcome Esther to her new role.
