Around DMSE
Please join us at the DMSE luncheon immediately following
commencement on June 4th. All graduates and their families
are invited as are alumni, current students, faculty, and
staff. Tables will be set up in the Chipman Room (8-314) and
nearby classrooms. During the luncheon, the 2004 Departmental
awards will be presented.
Awards and Honors
Recent distinctions awarded to members of the DMSE community
include:
Angela Belcher, John Chipman Career Development
Associate Professor of Materials Science and Engineering
and Biological Engineering, has been awarded tenure.
Merton C. Flemings, Toyota Professor Emeritus
and Director of the Lemelson-MIT Program, has received an
honorary doctorate from the Swiss Institute of Technology
in Lausanne.
Prof. Caroline Ross received the Irwin
Sizer Award for the Most Significant Improvement in MIT
Education.
Prof. Don Sadoway received the Everett
Moore Baker Memorial Award for Excellence in Undergraduate
Teaching.
Tanya Y. Cheng received honorable mention
in the S. Klein Prize for Scientific and Technical Writing.
Kasetta Coleman was a recipient of the
Ronald E. McNair Scholarship Award for black undergraduates
with strong academic performance and considerable contributions
to the minority community.
Timmie Ting-Wei Hong was inducted into
Phi Beta Kappa.
Jina Kim received the Service Leadership
Award for renewing the MIT chapter of Best Buddies.
Anita Kris received first Prize in the
Robert A. Boit Writing Prize–short story.
Ana Ramos has been granted a Fulbright
U.S. Advanced Student award to spend a year of study and
research in France. She will be doing a "Master of
Science and Technology" program in "Materials
Science and Nano-objects". The degree is run by the
Universite de Pierre et Marie Curie (Paris VI), and is a
consortium of seven different Universities and "Grandes
Ecoles" including the Ecole Polytechnique, Ecole Centrale,
and the Universite de Paris Sud among others. The program
includes both courses and a thesis to be done at one of
the local research laboratories.
Michelle Seitz received the Henry Ford
II Award. This award is made to a senior engineering student
who has maintained a cumulative average of 5.0 at the end
of his or her seventh term and who has exceptional potential
for leadership in engineering and society.
Karlene Maskaly and Agnieska Stachowiak
have been nominated to attend the 2004 GE Technology
and Innovation Day.
Aaron Raphel received the Charles "Harrison"
Smith Award from the Engineering Systems Division.
We're delighted to see the hard work and dedication of these
students, faculty, and staff recognized.
Upcoming Events
There will be a self-user training class on the use of the
CMSE X-ray Powder Diffractometers on Tuesday and Wednesday
June 8 & 9 from 9:00AM to 12:00PM. Attendance on both
days is required. Interested parties should contact Joe
Adario for a registration form. The class is limited to
6 so registrations will be accepted in the order in which
they are received. Should the number of registrations exceed
6 a second class will be scheduled.
The Boston Museum of Science
will host Strange
Matter from October 2, 2004 to January 2, 2005. This
exhibition explains the field of materials science and engineering
through demonstrations, interactive displays, and activities.

Personnel
Ms. Stephanie Bright joined the DMSE Student Services Office
effective June 1, 2004. She fills the position that was previously
held by Steve Malley. Stephanie comes to DMSE from MIT's Center
for Real Estate Development where she was the Assistant to
the Associate Director of Education. She brings three years
of experience in an academic office, and the Students Services
Office staff looks forward to having her support. Stephanie

John Henriques is leaving the position of Fiscal Officer
for Chemical Engineering, Materials Science and Engineering
and the Center for Biomedical Engineering. We wish him the
best in his future career.
