Around DMSE

On October 14, the Women of Materials Science, a graduate student group in the department, sponsored an information session for junior and senior undergraduate women to help them make decisions about life after MIT. There was a panel discussion by graduate women that had arrived at MIT though very different paths, followed by a Q&A session and dessert. About 15 undergraduate and 7 graduate students participated. The undergraduates had many, many questions that were answered. They hope to make this an annual event.

Awards

Prof. Edwin Thomas, Morris Cohen Professor of Materials Science and Engineering and Director of the Institute for Soldier Nanotechnologies, is one of 348 American Association for the Advancement of Science members awarded the distinction of Fellow this year. His citation recognizes his "insightful studies of polymer-based nanocomposites, particularly mechanical and optical properties of ordered block copolymer nanoparticle materials and for leadership in materials education and nanotechnology." See the Oct. 29 Tech Talk for coverage of this year's AAAS fellows.

In recognition of her service and dedication to the Materials Research Society, Prof. Anne Mayes was presented with the 2002 Woody Award . Amy Bosetti, a former member of MRS Headquarters Staff, said, "with her professionalism, eloquence, and fortitude, Ann was a key instrument in taking the MRS governing body to territory it has never gone before . . . . Anne is truly one of MRS's most precious resources."

As it celebrates its one-year anniversary, the Deshpande Center has announced the recipients of its 2003 grants. Among the awards are:

Yet-Ming Chiang, "Ionic Colloidal Crystals"
Klavs Jensen, "The Personal Chemistry System: Revolutionizing the Chemical Lab"
Caroline Ross, "A Low-Cost Way to Produce Microelectronic Devices"
Don Sadoway, "A Radical Steelmaking Method that Could Revolutionize the Steel Industry"

The Deshpande Center, part of MIT's School of Engineering, supports research at MIT and facilitates collaboration among faculty, students, researchers, entrepreneurs, innovators, and investors.
