September 2005
Around DMSE
Frederick D. Wilson, 1933–2005
Fred Wilson, MIT employee from 1959 to his retirement in
2002, passed away on September 9 after a brief illness. Fred
joined MIT as Technician and became Project Machinist in the
Ceramics Processing Laboratory in 1971. In 1987 he was promoted
to a sponsored research staff position as Laboratory Supervisor
of the Ceramics and Glass Labs. Fred also assisted DMSE in
space management and in implementation of department safety
examinations in the years preceding his retirement.
The Wilson family has asked that those who wish make contributions
in Fred's memory to:
The DeSanctis Clinical Scholars Fund at MGH
55 Fruit Street
Boston, MA 02114
Fred is survived by his wife, Andrea, two brothers, two
children, three grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.

Materials Day 2005 will be held October 11th. The
objective of this annual event is to bring together the MIT
Materials Community of students and faculty with alumni/ae
and our industrial and federal guests to explore an specific
aspect of materials research and provide a forum for discussion
and interaction via a symposium + poster session format. The
theme of this year's symposium, Chaired by Prof. Michael Rubner,
Director of MIT's Center for Materials Science and Engineering
(CMSE), is: "Frontiers in Materials: Interdisciplinary
Research in Materials Science and Engineering."
The mission of CMSE is to enable collaborative teams of interdisciplinary
faculty from various departments to focus on leading edge
research in the fundamental science and engineering of materials
for specific applications. CMSE's interdisciplinary research
groups (IRGs) investigate fundamental scientific questions
and pathways to reach significant technological goals that
can only be properly explored in a collaborative multidisciplinary
mode. These projects are specifically too large in scope to
be addressed by individual faculty members and their students.
Materials Day will feature the research efforts of the following
IRGs:
- Microphotonic Materials and Structures which are rapidly
emerging as one of the most promising new platforms for
future optical devices and device components.
- Nanostructured Polymer Assemblies with functional electronic,
optical and bio-interface properties that are becoming increasing
more important in many new technologies that exploit nanoscale
related properties and effects.
- Electronic Transport in Mesoscopic Semiconductor and
Magnetic Structures which explore charge and spin transport
in solid-state electronic structures whose building blocks
are in the nanometer size regime.
- Science and Engineering of Solid-State Portable Power
Sources which seeks to develop the basic science and engineering
of materials for solid-state electrochemical power sources,
and to use this fundamental knowledge to design devices
with energy and power delivery capabilities far superior
to those of anything available today.
- plus a Poster Session featuring the range of materials
research across MIT with the opportunity for 1-on-1 discussions
with faculty, grad students and post-docs.
As many of you know, the Center for Materials Science and
Engineering at MIT is one of a nation-wide network of Materials
Research Science and Engineering Centers sponsored by the
National Science Foundation. Additional details on the efforts
of the CMSE
and each of these IRGs are available.
There is no registration fee. Additional
details and electronic registration are available.
Opportunities
The Department has announced five new awards for graduate
students, all of which carry a $1,000 prize to be awarded
directly to the recipients. See the Jobs page for a description
of each award and the nomination procedure and deadline. A
DMSE
Award Nomination Cover Form must accompany all nominations.
Please submit all nominations to Kathy Farrell in Room 35-402.
Odds and Ends
The MIT Registrar provides a list of 2005 religious
holidays.
